Heartbreak and Hope as Tampa Bay Forces Game Five

2 min read

The Milwaukee Brewers were moments away from claiming their first World Series title on Tuesday night, but the Tampa Bay Rays proved they aren’t ready to go quietly. In a grueling contest that stretched into the twelfth inning, the Rays managed to escape the jaws of defeat with a 4-3 victory, staving off a sweep and forcing a decisive Game 5. For much of the late frames, it looked like Milwaukee would cruise to a championship, especially after rookie sensation Cooper Pratt launched a tiebreaking home run in the top of the twelfth to put the Brewers ahead.

The momentum shifted violently in the bottom half of that final frame. A throwing error by third baseman Joey Ortiz opened the door for Tampa Bay, followed by a clutch single from Liam Hicks. Jonny DeLuca then stepped up to drive in Cedric Mullins, knotting the score at three and sending the home crowd into a frenzy. With the bases loaded and pressure mounting, pinch-hitter Ben Williamson delivered the knockout blow, hitting a sharp chopper over first baseman Jake Bauers to seal the win and extend the series.

Despite the emotional high, the Rays face a daunting uphill climb. They are now among only five teams in history to fall behind 3-0 in a World Series and manage to take Game 4, though none of those teams ever went on to win it all. The physical toll is also mounting; star slugger Junior Caminero hobbled off the field with a foot injury during the rally, though manager Kevin Cash insisted his player would be ready for Wednesday regardless of how much pain he is in.

As both teams prepare for Game 5 at Tropicana Field, Milwaukee looks to regain its composure by starting Cy Young favorite Jacob Misiorowski. While Brewers captain Christian Yelich noted that championships require surviving these kinds of tests, it is now Tampa Bay that holds all the psychological momentum. Having broken Milwaukee’s eight-game winning streak in dramatic fashion, the Rays hope that their resilience can fuel an unprecedented comeback attempt against a powerhouse Brewers squad.
